The Svart Hona (Bohusläns dals Svarthöns) is an old Farmyard breed from Sweden’s northwest coast. They were first imported into the UK in 2011, and have aroused a lot of interest, with the breed being present at several shows across the country. A small primitive, hardy and vigorous country fowl with a calm temperament. They are excellent foragers; not prolific egg layers; but a good broody breed. Very similar to the Ayam Cemani, but rather smaller in size, this is a striking black–skinned, black plumaged bird.
General Characteristics: male
Carriage: Proud, tall stance.
Type: Abdomen rather broad. Back medium to long, slightly concave, well developed saddle hackles, smooth transition to the tail. Shoulders rounded, not flat. Wings of medium size, well developed, strong, pointing slightly downward. Tail well developed and carried quite high in a curved arc – sickles not entirely covering the straight tail feathers. Breast broad, well developed, carried relatively high.
Head: Medium size. Face smooth and non-feathered. Comb medium to large, firm single comb with 5-6 well-defined spikes. It is acceptable for a large comb to fall over slightly, but it should not obscure the view. Wattles medium in size. Earlobes a rather small oval.
Neck: Short and sturdy with rich feathering.
Legs and Feet: Thighs medium in length with strong muscle. Legs medium length, non-feathered, set wide apart, slightly bent at hocks. Four toes, well spread.
Plumage: Quite tight to body, feathers of medium width.
Female
The general characteristics are similar to those of the male, with the usual sexual differences. The female should have a well–developed rear, and high tail carriage - 45 degrees. It is acceptable for a laying hen or older hen to have lighter leg colour.
