A table breed renowned since the 15th century, La Flèche originated from the Sarthe region of North West France, being used to produce white-skinned petit poussin for the Paris market in the 1850s. Breeds involved in its creation included Crèvecoeur, Breda, and Brabançonne fowl as well as many of the breeds native to Normandy. Along with the Barbezieux fowl, La Flèche are the most popular breed in France, with fanciers favouring its fine table values. A large black breed with perfectly white earlobes and two vertical spikes for a comb, it has been known as the ‘devil’s chicken’.
