This is perhaps the oldest of the distinctive American breeds, being mentioned in the earliest poultry books as an indigenous and valued variety, as an excellent layer, very hardy and good for the table. They were first seen in this country at the Birmingham Show of 1870 and re-imported in 1984.
General characteristics: male
Carriage: Erect and graceful, denoting an active fowl.
Type: Body broad, full, compact. Back medium length, moderately broad rising with concave sweep to the tail. Breast broad, round and carried well up. Wings rather large, well-folded and carried without drooping, the ends being covered by the saddle hackle. Tail long, full, slightly expanded, carried at an angle of 45 degrees above the horizontal, main tail broad and overlapping, sickles long, well-curved.
Head: Medium size, carried well up. Beak short, stout, well-curved. Face surface smooth, skin fine and soft in texture. Eyes large, full and prominent. Comb rose, not so large as to overhang the eyes or beak, firm and straight on the head, square in front, uniform on both sides, free from hollow centre, terminating in a spike at the rear, the point of which turns slightly upward, the top covered with small points. Earlobes oval, of medium size. Wattles broad, medium in length, well rounded, smooth, fine in texture, free from folds or wrinkles.
Neck: Medium length, well-arched, tapering. Hackle abundant.
Legs and feet: Medium length legs, set well apart, straight when viewed from the front, shanks fine, round and free from feathers. Toes four, well spread.
Plumage: Feathering soft but close, body fluff moderately full.
Female
The general characteristics are similar to those of the male, allowing for the natural sexual differences.
BANTAM
Dominique bantams should follow exactly the standard for large fowl.
